`On Usury`, the treaty by Martin Smiglecki SJ, was the first strictly scientific attempt to show the economic and social background of the bourgeois and peasant social stratum in Poland and Lithuania at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The author, being an excellent logician, expressed his views in a very precise way, limiting his technical language to a minimum, so that his treatise would be understandable to readers from a range of social positions and circumstances. Its careful (...) analysis of the socio-economic situation and clear formulation of its postulates enabled it to function, over the course of two centuries, as a practical manual imparting guidance to the ruling class as they sought to maintain a just and fair stance in their dealings with the burghers and peasants. Smiglecki’s ideas have become a reference point for many generations of professors of moral philosophy and folk preachers seeking to raise social issues in their own works. (shrink)

L'attivita dei gesuiti polacchi e lituani durante il primo secolo della loro presenza in Polonia non si limitava, naturalmente, ad uno stretto cerchio dell’ambiente universitario di Vilna, anche se l’operato di questo centre educative, dal quale uscivano i futuri quadri politici e amministrativi dello Stato polacco-lituano, sarebbe gia di per se sufficientemente rappresentativo. Infatti, l’accrescere dell’interesse accademico per la questione sociale, registrato a Vilna, era di data posteriore rispetto all'attivita pratica, svolta su questo campo ormai da piu di 70 anni (...) ad opera dei gesuiti non impegnati direttamente airinsegnamento universitario o medio. Furono proprio loro a creare im clima che consent! ed ispirö sia la pubblicazione del trattato di MARCIN ŚMIGLECKI SJ, che gli scritti degli altri. Vi furono anche diversi documenti, emanati appositamente sia dai rispettivi Generali della Compagnia di Gesu a Roma, sia dai Provinciali locali, sia infine da Visitatori delle Province Polacca e Lituana della Compagnia. “Przeglad Powszechny” first appeared in 1884, when the Jesuits in Krakow agreed to take over “Przeglad Lwowski” from Fr. Edward Podolski, who had been its editor. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the editors-in-chief of the “Przeglad” were Marian Ignacy Morawski SJ, Jan Pawelski SJ, Jan Urban SJ and Jan Rostworowski SJ. Thanks to their efforts and extensive prior editorial experience, “Przeglad” stood for a high level of quality, and was one of the most highly valued social (...) and cultural journals devoted to religious, philosophical, ethical, cultural, historical and political issues. The overriding aims set out by the editors of the review were the dissemination of properly Catholic principles of conduct and obedience to the Church. The article will present the social thought of the Jesuits as they appeared in “Przeglad Powszechny” from the time of its inception until the recovery of Poland’s independence. (shrink)

There have been many papers on the Jesuit relationship with the State and with the civil powers in the Western Countries. But there are no such elaborations concerning Poland. However, it was not a central aim, the Jesuits had to engage in the political situation of the country where they did His apostolic work though they did not commit themselves personally in the policy. The Jesuits had their own concept of the State and the state policy. And they showed great (...) caution in preparing the policy treaties in order to save impartiality. (shrink)

Bardzo uważne przeczytanie książki Przekroczyć próg nadziei pod kątem występujących w niej elementów chrześcijańskiej nauki spolecznej jest poważnym wyzwaniem. Przed zabraniem się do tej pracy przeczytałem wywiad udzielony przez kardynała Karola Wojtyły profesorowi Vittorio Possenti w 1978 roku, ale jeszcze przed jego wyborem na Papieża, zatytułowany O możliwości nauki spolecznej Kosciola. Wywiad ten zostal opublikowany we włoskim kwartalniku Il Nuovo Areopago dopiero po encyklice Centesimus annus, czyli po 1 maja 1991 roku, jako komentarz kwartalnika do tej encykliki. Polskie tlumaczenie tego (...) wywiadu wydal Ośrodek Chrzescijanskiej Myśli Spłlecznej AUGUSTINUM w serii Dokumenty, nr 11, z dn. 15 stycznia 1992 roku. (shrink)

Ogłoszenie encykliki Rerum novarum przez Leona XIII w dniu 15 maja 1891 roku dało początek temu, co dzisiaj nazywamy nauką społeczną Kościoła, ścisłej - Kościoła katolickiego, ponieważ Kościoły prawosławne nie podjęły tego tematu, zaś Kościoły protestanckie zajęły się problematyką społeczną dopiero w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach XX wieku. Istnieje ogólna zgoda specjalistów co do łączenia narodzin nauki społecznej Kościoła z ogłoszeniem tej encykliki. Przedtem nie istniał oficjalny nurt nauczania społecznego, w kształcie zamierzonego ciągu formalnych wypowiedzi Urzędu Nauczycielskiego Kościoła. Kościół pod koniec XIX (...) stulecia stal się świadkiem radykalnych przemian politycznych, gospodarczych i społecznych oraz znalazł się w sferze różnorakich wpływów dominujących ideologii. Życie gospodarcze weszło w okres tzw. „drugiej rewolucji przemysłowej", przypadającej na lata 1870-1914. Rerum novarum uważa się powszechnie za początek nauczania społecznego Kościoła w jego nowoczesnym ujęciu. Wcześniej jedynie ostrzegano wiernych przed błędami. (shrink)

Compiuto il noviziato a Vilna negli anni 1629-1631, gli fiz fatto ripetere Tultimo anno degli studi umanistici nel seminario pedagogico a Połock. L'anno 1633 A. A. Olizarowski passo a Varsavia in qualita di lettore. Solo successivamente, dal 1634 al 1636 fece studi filosofici regolari nel collegio di Pułtusk. Tuttavia, prima di espletare il (...) triennio filosofico, verso la fine del mese di agosto 1636, A. A. Olizarowski lascio la Compagnia di Gesu, probabilmente in seguito a qualche torto, che gli sarebbe stato fatto durante uno degli esami nel corso degli studi. (shrink)

Le P. Stanislas Szadurski s'est acquis par ses ecrits un renom de forte intelligence et de tete de file de la pensee des philosophes jesuites du XVIIIe siecle en Pologne. On s'interesse de plus en plus a sa personne et a ses conceptions que l’on veut prouver sur documents et connaitre plus largement sa place dans l’histoire do la pensee philosophique. D'ou notre ouvrage sur Szadurski, ouvrage qui est la premiere monographie a partir de sources biographiques et doctrinales inconnues jusqu'ä (...) maintenant du public. Notre texte comprend : 1) quelques donnees bibliographiques, 2) une breve biographie de Szadurski, 3) la presentation de ses conceptions philosophiques principales, divisees en logique, metaphysique, physique, une courte synthese do tout son enseignement. Das Buch über J. Mirewicz wurde von Slawomir Szczyrba, einem Lehrbeauftragten des Priesterseminars in Łódź, als Doktorarbeit unter der Leitung von Professor Bischof B. Bejze verfaßt. Szczyrba rechnet seine Arbeit der religionsphilosophischen Werken zu. Er will die These nachweisen, daß die Stellung des Menschen gegenüber Gott einen bedeutenden Einfluß auf sein Wertsystem und, in weiterer Folge, auf sein moralisches Benehmen hat. Derselben Meinung war auch Mirewicz. In Hinsicht auf die ethische Implikationen der Bejahung Gottes gehört das Hauptthema der vielartigen Tätigkeiten (...) Mirewicz's zu der immerwährend aktuellen und offenstehenden Frage nach der Selbständigkeit der Ethik. (shrink)

The studies on the history of logic in the Polish schools of the Commission for National Education in the period of the Enlightenment that have been published up to date evaluate the educational practice with respect to its accordance to Condillac’s work. His textbook was indeed order by the Commission for its schools, and it was also evaluated highly, but it was not published in the Polish language. From the rules of the Commission and its didactic practice, which made use (...) of a series of the most eminent eclectic textbooks on logic then functioning in the European school, we can deduce that the Commission must have evaluated Condillac’s book as too one-sided. Aside to his approach, there functioned in then Polish school a number of other studies. The Commission exposed a textbook written by the French Jesuit, Claude Buffier, in the first place. Despite the fact that he was close to modern solutions, e.g. Descartes’ and Locke’s, nevertheless he showed respect for scholastic tradition. Accordingly, he presented a group of solutions well-known from the traditional approaches. He only emphasised, in the modern spirit, how important is the veracity of the premises of syllogism as the fundamental condition for the veracity of the conclusion. It follows that the role of the theory of reasoning was limited and at the same time the value of epistemological problems was stressed. (shrink)

Sposród trzech punktów jego referatu ustosunkuję się tylko do pierwszego, ponieważ rozumienie naszej wolności i dobroci Boga zależy od rozumienia przygodności bytu.

The article reviews the book Korespondencja Adama Adamandego Kochańskiego SJ, edited by Bogdan Lisiak.

This article discusses the problem of movement. The meaning of the term “movement” has undergone more changes in the course of history than any other term. The main change has been the immobilizing of movement. To show this, the author briefly presents the vicissitudes of its development from antiquity to the present. The relation between force and movement is also considered. In this matter the author follows the approach of Fr. John Dorda SJ, who proves that forces are not efficient (...) causes, but rather formal causes. The fields of forces do not influence movement generally, but only its shape and trajectory. To illustrate this, four cases are presented and the Lorentzian equation is adduced. The problem of the ontological status of movement has been discussed at some length. It is argued that movement cannot be reduced to geometrical relations alone. (shrink)

Sposród trzech punktów jego referatu ustosunkuję się tylko do pierwszego, ponieważ rozumienie naszej wolności i dobroci Boga zależy od rozumienia przygodności bytu.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiam lub rekonstruuję oraz krytycznie komentuję argumenty za istnieniem Boga podane przez Stanisława Ziemiańskiego SJ. Wśród tych argumentów odróżniam argumenty ogólnometafizyczne, metafizyczno-przyrodnicze oraz metafizyczno-antropologiczne. Głównym założeniem argumentów ogólnometafizycznych jest teza o niekonieczności powiązania istnienia z różnymi treściami/istotami bytów (przygodność istnieniowa/radykalna) oraz form substancjalnych lub przypadłościowych z ich podmiotami (przygodność istotowa/częściowa). Gwarantem zachodzenia tego powiązania ma być Bóg jako byt, w którym związek między wymienionymi czynnikami przyjmuje charakter konieczny. Argumenty metafizyczno-przyrodnicze nie są aż tak abstrakcyjne, lecz odwołują się (...) do pewnych danych kosmologii (Wielki Wybuch, negentropia) i biologii (powstanie organizmów żywych jako samopowielających się całości funkcjonalnych). Odwołanie się do działania Boga ma wyjaśniać te (same w sobie) jednorazowe lub znikomo prawdopodobne zdarzenia lub zjawiska. Na inne dane zwracają uwagę argumenty metafizyczno-antropologiczne. Są to mianowicie następujące, powszechnie występujące wśród ludzi, fenomeny: pragnienie szczęścia, poczucie prawa moralnego, oddawanie czci istocie najwyższej. Według omawianego Autora wyjaśnienie tych fenomenów jedynie w odwołaniu do czynników psychologicznych i społecznych jest niesprawne. Natomiast stają się one zrozumiałe, gdy potraktujemy je jako odmiany ludzkich odniesień do realnie istniejącego Boga. Dyskutując powyższe argumenty, zwracam uwagę na szanse i ograniczenia argumentacji teistycznej we współczesnych dyskusjach filozoficznych. Wartość argumentów metafizyczno-przyrodniczych zależy od zmieniającego się stanu wiedzy naukowej, a argumentów metafizyczno-antropologicznych – od zmieniających się ludzkich nastawień. Od powyższych zależności wolne są argumenty ogólnometafizyczne, jednak wydają się one zbyt abstrakcyjne dla współczesnego czytelnika. (shrink)

W artykule autor przedstawia dorobek o. Ziemiańskiego SJ na polu metafizyki. Okazją do tego był jubileusz 90. urodzin, z którego perspektywy można pełniej docenić wkład Jubilata w tę dziedzinę filozofii. Prezentację rozpoczyna przybliżenie kontekstu historycznego kształtowania się myśli filozoficznej o. Ziemiańskiego, gdzie podstawową rolę odegrała filozofia tomistyczna, skoncentrowana w ówczesnych polskich realiach na dyskusji z marksizmem. Dyskusja ta nie sprowadzała się wyłącznie do odkrywania ograniczeń i krytyki marksizmu. Przedstawiciele tomizmu proponowali własną interpretację rzeczywistości, odznaczającą się większym realizmem i bardziej przekonującą (...) racjonalnością. Kolejny punkt poświęcony został koncepcji metafizyki o. Ziemiańskiego, nawiązującej do tradycji arystotelesowsko-tomistycznej, wzbogaconej elementami zaczerpniętymi ze współczesnych kierunków filozoficznych oraz nauk szczegółowych. Pośród najbardziej charakterystycznych cech tego ujęcia wskazano oparcie na doświadczeniu i zorientowanie na byt realnie istniejący, metodę _abstractio totius_, poznawczy realizm i maksymalizm, jak też ukierunkowanie na poznanie bytu absolutnego. W dalszej kolejności omówiono wkład Ziemiańskiego w interpretację kluczowych zagadnień metafizycznych, takich jak transcendentalia, przygodność, celowość czy struktura bytu. Podkreślono, iż opowiadał się on za egzystencjalną naturą transcendentaliów, a przez to ich niesprowadzalnością do pojęć uniwersalnych. Ponadto, w ciekawy sposób przedstawił specyfikę relacji wiążącej byt przygodny z bytem koniecznym, jak również uzasadnienie konieczności istnienia przyczyny celowej oparte na analizie wewnętrznej struktury bytu. Ważnym jego wkładem do refleksji nad strukturą bytu było także opracowanie problematyki relacji w ujęciu F. Suareza oraz ukazanie funkcjonalnych aspektów złożenia bytu z istoty i istnienia. W zakończeniu odnotowano wnioski koncentrujące się na znaczeniu metafizyki jako bazowej dziedziny poznania filozoficznego. (shrink)

Celem artykułu jest omówienie poglądów prof. Stanisława Ziemiańskiego dotyczących znaczenia nauk przyrodniczych dla filozofii i teologii oraz relacji między naukami przyrodniczymi, filozofią i teologią. Na tle teodycealnego stanowiska o. Ziemiańskiego, zaproponowanego w ramach jego teologii naturalnej, został zaprezentowany sposób, w jaki autor wykorzystuje dane nauk przyrodniczych w swoich poszukiwaniach filozoficznych. Ziemiański przyjmuje stanowisko, które cechuje się ostrożnością, a nawet zachowywaniem pewnego rodzaju dystansu wobec obrazu świata kreowanego przez współczesne przyrodoznawstwo. W szczególności nie podziela filozoficznej interpretacji naukowego obrazu świata, która miałaby (...) prowadzić do panewolucjonizmu rozciągniętego na całość historii wszechświata. Na tle współczesnych stanowisk licznych polskich przedstawicieli ewolucjonizmu teistycznego, wywodzących się z katolickich środowisk intelektualnych, którzy starają się uzgadniać ewolucję z kreacją na gruncie filozofii, poglądy Ziemiańskiego są mniej typowe i niewątpliwie wyróżniają się owym antyewolucjonistycznym rysem. Analizę stanowiska Ziemiańskiego rozpoczęto od rekonstrukcji jego ujęcia teoriopoznawczego i metodologicznego w zakresie dotyczącym statusu nauk przyrodniczych, filozofii i teologii oraz obrazów rzeczywistości materialnej, jakich one dostarczają. W dalszej części omówiono wybrane kwestie przedmiotowe, które mieszczą się w obszarze zagadnienia relacji między naukami przyrodniczymi i teologią, a które podejmował Ziemiański, w szczególności problematykę dotyczącą genezy wszechświata i pochodzenia życia biologicznego. Następnie podjęta została próba odtworzenia ogólnego obrazu relacji między nauką i religią (naukami przyrodniczymi i teologią), a także rozumem i wiarą, w związku ze sposobem ujmowania przez Ziemiańskiego między innymi kontrowersji kreacjonizm – ewolucjonizm, zagadnienia momentu animacji płodu ludzkiego oraz grzechu pierworodnego, cierpienia i śmierci. Na zakończenie do niektórych twierdzeń Ziemiańskiego ustosunkowano się krytycznie i polemicznie. Wspólnym mianownikiem dla tych uwag jest znaczenie wpływu przyjmowanych założeń metafizycznych na interpretację i wykorzystanie danych naukowych w tworzeniu filozoficznego i teologicznego obrazu świata. The author of the article argues against some of Stanisław Pyszka's views presented in the article Ewolucja katolickiej nauki społecznej [Evolution of the Catholic social teaching], published in: „Forum Philosophicum", 8: 2003. T. Ślipko reproaches S. Pyszka for considering the views on social problems expressed in the encyclical letter „Kerum novarum" „dogmatic", as influenced in part by the Thomistic philosophy. Pyszka opposes them to a pastoral perspective of the encyclical letters written by Pope John XXIII, Paul (...) VI and John Paul II. Ślipko states that Catholic social teaching develops, taking into consideration historical circumstances in which human social groups are placed, but the moral principles are unchanged. (shrink)

The Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy in Cracow has existed since 1934, when it was erected by the Congregation for Seminaries and Universities. For the first 55 years it educated only the Jesuits, but since 1989 it has been opened to the laity as well. A memorial book Philosophia Rationis Magistra Vitae was published to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Philosophy with special dedication to its Professors: Fr. Roman Darowski SJ, Fr. Piotr Lenartowicz SJ, and Fr. Stanislaw Ziemiański (...) SJ. All of them have worked at the former Faculty of Philosophy which is now the Faculty of Philosophy of Ignatianum. In these past few years, Fr. Ziemiański and Fr. Lenartowicz have celebrated their 70th birthday, during this year Fr. Darowski will celebrate such jubilee. The book consists of two volumes. The first contains congratulatory letters from Provincials of the Polish Jesuits to the Jubilarians. It also contains a short history of the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy in Cracow, and provides presentations of the professors celebrating their anniversaries. (shrink)

W artykule Jedna czy wiele dusz? Stanisław Ziemiański SJ omawia dwa stanowiska dotyczące problemu genezy duszy ludzkiej – kreacjonizm i traducjanizm. Według nauki Kościoła Katolickiego „każda dusza duchowa jest bezpośrednio stwarzana przez Boga nie jest ona 'produktem' rodziców - i jest nieśmiertelna : DS 1440.), nie ginie więc po jej oddzieleniu się od data w chwili śmierci i połączy się na nowo z ciałem w chwili ostatecznego zmartwychwstania". Jest to stanowisko kreacjonizmu osobowych, indywidualnych dusz ludzkich. Natomiast traducjanizm stoi na (...) stanowisku, że dusza ludzka jest przekazywana dziecku przez rodziców. Pan Bóg stworzył duszę ludzką tylko jeden raz - w momencie powołania do istnienia naszych Prarodziców. I ta „jedna jedyna" dusza przekazywana jest w procesie biologicznego rozmnazania się osób ludzkich. (shrink)

Contacts of the two logicians are listed, and all Gödel's written mentions of Tarski's work are quoted. Why did Gödel almost never mention Tarski's definition of truth in his notes and papers? This puzzle of Gödel's silence, proposed by Feferman, is not merely biographical or psychological but has interesting connections to Gödel's philosophical views.No satisfactory answer is given by the three “standard” explanations: no need to repeat the work already done; Tarski's achievement was obvious to Gödel; Gödel's exceptional caution. In (...) fact, , Tarski had done the work, but Gödel almost never mentioned the achievement; , the obviousness is no explanation for the omission of Tarski's work in contexts in which an application of the definition of satisfaction was useful, and even necessary; , the point was not just caution: if Gödel had felt the need to mention the program of scientific semantics he could easily have done that in his manuscripts, or in conversations.Three ideas, detectable in Gödel's approach, can help us understand Gödel's silence: the idea of truth as the intuitive provability in the most general sense; defining it set-theoretically would contribute nothing. the idea of truth as an inexhaustible idea in the sense of Kant; “truth in general” is a category that must be applicable to all kinds of sentential expressions; also, while for Gödel language was secondary, Tarski's definition is focused on language. the idea of logic as the universal language, in Hintikka's sense, as opposed to the perception of logic as a reinterpretable calculus; hence the thesis that semantics is inexpressible. BackgroundCurrently, we are facing a demographic shift to an older population and its consequences worldwide: in the years to come, several older people will need nursing home care. The work culture is important for care quality in NHs. Some Norwegian municipalities have implemented the Joy of Life Nursing Home strategy, representing a resource-oriented health-promoting approach. Knowledge about how implementation of the JoLNH approach impacts the work culture is scarce.AimssWe hypothesized that the JoLNH strategy impacts positively on the work culture: when (...) comparing measurements at two time points and when comparing two municipalities, among which one has implemented the JoLNH and the other has not.MethodWith a 1-year interval, healthcare personnel in 43 NHs located in two large Norwegian municipalities responded to a survey in two waves. In total, 558 healthcare personnel participated at T1 and 515 at T2. Work culture was assessed by the Systematizing Person–Group Relations Instrument.FindingsThe municipality implementing the JOLNH strategy experienced significant increases in SPGR dimensions, representing positive orientations towards a better work culture, whereas those working in the non-JoLNH municipality reported an increase in SPGR dimensions, signifying a worsened work culture.DiscussionThe data indicate that the implemented JoLNH strategy has endorsed positive effects in the work culture. The JoLNH strategy emphasizes on the quality of patient care, which is what healthcare personnel, in general, are much concerned about. Furthermore, attention to task orientation and independent work seem to encourage a better work culture in NHs.ConclusionThis study suggests that the JoLNH strategy impacts positively on the work culture in Norwegian NHs. Context is essential in virtually all human activities. Yet some logical notions seem to be context-free. For example, the nature of the universal quantifier, the very meaning of “all”, seems to be independent of the context. At the same time, there are many quantifier expressions, and some are context-independent, while others are not. Similarly, purely logical consequence seems to be context-independent. Yet often we encounter strong inferences, good enough for practical purposes, but not valid. The two types of examples suggest (...) a general problem: how to characterise the context-free logical concepts in their natural environment, that is, in the field of their context-dependent associates. A general Thesis on Quantifiers is formulated: among all quantifiers, the context-free ones are just those definable by the universal quantifier. The issue of inferences is treated following the approach introduced by Richard L. Epstein: valid ones are an extreme case, the result of the disappearance of context-dependence. This idea can be applied to an analysis of a form of abduction, called “reductive inference” in Polish literature on logic. A tentative Thesis on Inferences identifies the validity of a strong inference that is context-independent. (shrink)
